On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha and Abagtha, Zethar and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus, to bring Queen Vashti before the king with her royal crown, in order to show the peoples and the princes her beauty, for she was lovely to look at. But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command delivered by the eunuchs. At this the king became enraged, and his anger burned within him. Esther 1:10-12

NOTE: Just because the king wanted her to wear her crown, that does not mean that is all he wanted her to wear. I have read some ridiculous ideas to that effect, so I just wanted to make clear that I think it’s a preposterous position. We are not to add details that are not there in order to make ourselves seem clever or to make the topic more exciting. Just don’t. The king was angry because his command was refused by the queen. That is something that kings during that time period (or any time period, I believe) were not accustomed to at all, let alone in front of servants and guests.
As we will see in later verses, the king and his advisers were concerned that her bad example would spread throughout the kingdom. So he divorced her, but unlike many other kings since then (for a lot less of an offense), did not have her put to death.
